Προέλευση τοπωνυμίου:

The name derived from Anchialos intention anchi, which means close, near and word-als alos means sea. Αγχίαλος είναι η παραθαλάσσια πόλη.

Brief Chronology:

The built in Anchialos 1906 from, chased from Bulgarian chauvinists, residents of Eastern Rumelia Aghialou. These refugees, having escaped the arson that destroyed the city-fled at the beginning- in the Salinas area and from there, boat, survived arriving in Smyrna, Istanbul and Egypt, while others went to the Tower, Midday in Sozopoli and from where they departed, with steamers, για την Ελλάδα.

The first Anchialos, was a port on the Black Sea. Το 1878 came under the Bulgarian hegemony and 1885 annexed to Bulgaria. At the beginning of the fourth decade of the 19th century, Anchialos inhabited by 5000-6000 mainly Greeks and Bulgarians few. The British diplomatic representative St . The refugees settled in New Anchialos in the ancient city of Pyrasou, which were 4 km farther ancient Thebes Fthiotides, near the ruins of the village which was built Μικροθήβες.

The settlement of the region starting from the Neolithic Period and continues to the Bronze Age, στη Γεωμετρική καθώς και στα Ιστορικά έως και τα Βυζαντινά Χρόνια.

The anchialites settled into their new home and were involved in fishing and farming- ιδιαίτερα με την αμπελουργία.

Refugees settled in the nearby village Αϊδίνι. They came from another source Hellenism, Aydin from Asia Minor, the story has a tragic emphasis: Slaughter-June 1919- two thousand people from the Turks. Among these was 32 πρόσκοποι.

With memories of the fire, Slaughter and the final destruction of '22, rooted and living here, another near the sea wistfully reminiscent of the old country who, however, achieved starting to translate into development and progress

The village is built on the hillside "Castle" and was named by Fthiotides Thebes, the ruins of which are located in. The old, Turkish name Akitsi or Akita, οφείλονταν σε τούρκο που είχε το τσιφλίκι του εκεί.

Brief history:

The N. Georgiadis writes: "... Not twenty steps to the Pyrason, ekeito the famous city of Thebes century Fthiotikai (Strabo 9 435 ), which remains important today and found only on the village hill Akita, του απέχοντος μίαν ώραν  από το Καραμπάς…”.

O Zosimas Esphigmenitis adds other interesting facts: "In the Dimon Almyrou control the following villages .... Aydin Akitsi ..., having residents 150 and the Temple Mount Charalambos, refurbished the 1885, ιερείς δε εγγάμους τρεις…”.

As informs us Tsopotos, the Akitsi, the time when the area became the property of Ali Pasha, was the only settlement, not only in the area in the manor and the "New", another adjacent meadow, where, together with the manor of Karabash, αποτέλεσαν το μεγάλο κτήμα του Τοπάλη.

Other Turkish names that meet the village is Akkitsle, Akketseli, Ακκετζί.

The Anchialos not previously called Agchialos but Fthiotides Thebes. This name is known the two ancient cities of Magnesia ,One is located near the village Mikrothives , πάνω στο δρόμο Βόλου-Αλμυρού και η άλλη βρίσκεται στη Νέα Αγχίαλο.

The second one was called Fthiotides Thebes built where there was in ancient times the city Pyrasos, όπου έχουμε αναφορά στον Στράβωνα .Η θέση της επιβεβαιώθηκε από ανασκαφικές έρευνες που έγιναν το 1907.

Through an excavation proved that the low hill to the east of New Aghialou was the citadel of Pyrassou. The findings of the masonry remains of successive settlements and mainly pottery , belong to the classical , in the geometric, Halki , Middle Helladic and Neolithic. The area still existed and following centuries, but also had another name Demetrius. "Its harbor was vital as was used in the export and import trade of Thessaly. Was destroyed and she 217 x by Philip. During the 2nd century AD reaches its peak level in culture until the end of 7 century. So the product designated < Christian Theban> .

The excavations revealed ten important monuments which are the following: the acropolis of Pyrasou , the basilica of Hope ( Royal B) ,complex of public buildings and purchases , the episcopal palace ,the basilica of Saint Demetrios ( A royal ') ,the hypocaust bath west of the royal ,paved boulevard with shops – < embolos > east of the royal, gymnasium and bath south of the basilica and the basilica of Bishop Peter ( Royal C) που είναι το μεγαλύτερο και πιο ενδιαφέρον μνημείο της περιοχής.

Royal D-St. Demetriou

The Basilica of St. Cerium located southeast of the current market off the highway. Particularly characteristic is the formation of the atrium and cross proktismaton , baptistery and sacristy . The very rich sculptural architectural decoration , characterized by high quality. Χρονολογείται από το 2ο μισό του 5ου αιώνα βορειοδυτικά της βασιλικής Α΄ .

Basilica B-Bishop Hopes

The Basilica of Bishop hope lies off the highway to Volos , below the citadel over the harbor . Τρίκλιτη βασιλική με νάρθηκα , patio and proktismata. Excavation became the 1928-1929. Further excavations were conducted 1960-1972. Seem to have repairs done as evidenced by the inscription found on the patio and donor reports as the deacon Stephen . The same inscription mentions the name of Bishop Hopes ( 1 the half of the 6th century x) από την οποία χαρακτηρίζεται και η βασιλική.

Royal C-Bishop Peter

The Basilica of Bishop Peter is behind the market next to the highway to Salty and occupies the entire block is the largest and most important monument that have been discovered in New Anchialo. The excavation continued by P.Lazaridi. The decoration is of particular interest as it is rich in marble architectural and decorative mural , mosaics and frescoes. Από το όνομα του Αρχιερέως Πέτρου που αναγράφηκε σε ανακαινιστική επιγραφή του νοτίου τείχους χαρακτηρίστηκε όλο το συγκρότημα ΄Βασιλική του Αριερέως Πέτρου΄ .

Royal D

The royal cemetery located outside the wall ,at the western end of New Aghialou . Τρίκλιτη βασιλική με νάρθηκα , patio and proktismata. excavated the 1934-1936. Η βασιλική χρονολογείται μεταξύ του 5ου -6ου αιώνα μ.Χ.

Royal E

Located outside the walls dated to the 5th-6th century AD. Hypocaust in 100 x. southeast of the basilica with mosaic floors Martyrdom. Κτίριο παλαιοχριστιανικής εποχής.

Royal F

Βρίσκεται δίπλα στο αστυνομικό τμήμα της Νέας Αγχιάλου .Κατά τη διάρκεια της ανασκαφικής έρευνας αποκαλύφθηκε η ένατη κατά σειρά βασιλική στο κέντρο της πόλης .Χρονολογείται πιθα�Aisled basilica with narthex/p>

Royal Martyrdom

The Royal Tabernacle is located at Stavridis to the vegetable garden to the south of New Agxialos. Aisled basilica with narthex , built on the ruins of oldest buildings , probably in the 4th century BC. In the sanctuary of the royal rescued a built base of the altar , το κιβωτιόσχημο εγκαίνιο και τμήμα του σύνθρονου .Χαρακτηριστικοί είναι οι οκτάπλευροι κιονίσκοι του φράγματος του Πρεσβυτερίου .

Revealed in 1982 private plot ,dated the 3rd-4th century x and served for the religious needs

Baptistery

The discovered vaptistiriopou 1983, south of the atrium of the Basilica of Bishop Petroutheoreitai unique in Greece. In the center is octagonal baptistery. Impressive marble floor. The so-called Episcopal Palace is 100 m. δυτικά της βασιλικής του Αγίου Δημητρίου .

Complex Public Buildings
