The village owes its name to the Convent of St. Lawrence, built by Roman Catholic Benedictine monks (the Amalfinous) during the Crusades (11th century.). The monastery was abandoned later be built again as orthodox monastery by Saint Lawrence in Trapezountios, monk of Great Lavra on Mount Athos. The reconstruction of the monastery was completed in 1378 with financial assistance of the emperor Alexios Komninos C.
