In the space unfolds the present town, flourished in the past few years both cities, ηPyrasosand ChristianFthiotides Thebes.

The ancient findings demonstrate continuous human presence from the Neolithic period until today. Ηfit for ports Pyrasos, as reported by the ancient geographerStrabo, the classical and later years wasseaportτωνHellenistic Fthiotides Thebes (which were near the villageMikrothives Magnesia). The archaeological excavations have found remains of large houses, remains of masonry, pottery from classical, the Geometric to the Neolithic era.

It 217 BC. the Pyrassou destroyed by the troops of the Macedonian KingPhilip V’, along with neighboring Fthiotides Thebes. Very fast, in the same area developed a new city. Originally named the Fthiotides Thebes. In the years of Christianity is the name Thebes which, the subheading of Thebes in Boeotia, changed toThessalikes Christian Thebes. The new town quickly developed into an important Christian center. It was burnt and destroyed half of the 7th century, at the time ofSlavictravel in Greece.

Of the most important archaeological finds in the area, considered by many royal revealed by archaeological excavations, which are dated to the 5th and 6th century AD. A special feature of these structures is interesting mosaics which, thanks to the efforts of archaeologists, held today in excellent condition. The discovery of fragments of ancient wall, the length of which is estimated at 2.000 meters, enclosing scope 250.000 square meters, shows the size of Fthiotides Thebes and its importance in antiquity.

At first glance, the visitor will be enchanted by the plithosarchaiologikon findings which demonstrate that New Agchialos flourished from the 3rd to the 6th century AD. The New Agchialos formerly called Fthiotides Thebes by that name is known the two ancient cities in Magnesia. One seaside around the lovely komopoleos New Aghialou ,Founded in 1906 by Greek refugees ,arising from Anchialo of AnatolikisRomylias. ruins the other located in a hillside north of the village Mikrothives.. The other town beach being originally called Fthiotides Thebes but Pyrasos and Demetrius . Homer's Iliad B 695 says that Protessilaos son Ifiklea took men from prison , the anthosparto Pyraso , the reach manhood and Pteleos and 40 black ships took part in the Trojan War.

The overgrown today low hill 'Magoyla' height 29m. was the citadel of Pyrasou. Findings, masonry remains of successive settlements and mainly ceramic utensils belonging to the Classical, in Geometric, Halki, Middle Helladic and Neolithic.

Significant ecclesiastical buildings both public and private with rich decoration of marble sculptures ,mosaic mural and floor paved roads, aqueducts and numerous works of art dating from the 3rd to the 6th AD. During the archaeological excavations

It 1941-1953 by G. Sotiriou-Professor of Byzantine Archaeology at the University of Athens and 1959-1992 under the direction of the Director of the Byzantine Museum of Athens Paul Lazaridis discovered many important monuments belonging mainly in the later centuries of the Roman and early Christian era until the 7th century AD when installed and the end of the town.

The most important monuments have been discovered are :

  • Basilica of St. Demetrios the second half of the 5th century AD, whose name came from mosaic inscription on the floor of the baptistery
  • Bishop Hope Basilica of the late 5th century AD. beginning of the 6th century AD.
  • Basilica of the Martyrdom 431 AD
  • Cemetery Basilica of 5th-6th century AD.
  • Royal V of the 5th century AD.
  • Basilica of TH 5 century AD.
  • Proprietary aisled chapel of the 3rd-4th century AD.
  • Royal on the NE point of the wall of the 5th-6th century AD
  • The Group of the Kings of Bishop Peter : There are three successive royal ,the first dates back to the middle or second half of the 5th century AD. and third in the time of Justinian the First (532 A.D.) . Also revealed a number of public and private buildings , hypocausts baths and cemeteries . Apart from the large number of archaeological finds New Agchialos is important pole of attraction many tourists. The New Agchialos has a unique nature with many bays , clear waters and traditional villages with remarkable beauty. Combines mountain and sea ,serenity and nightlife , ancient and modern culture. The tourism organization of New Agchialos is at a high point , with luxury and middle taxixenodocheia and fun.
